The method, plainly explained

Maria Montessori was a physician before she was an educator. Her method is not a philosophy imposed on children - it is what she observed them doing when given freedom, beautiful materials and time.

The education of even a small child, therefore, does not aim at preparing him for school but for life.

Is Montessori too free?

It's a space that's set up to meet the developmental needs of a child. It supports a child's independence, curiosity, creativity and need for movement and order.

Why mix ages?

Freedom in a Montessori classroom is freedom within clear limits. Children choose their work, but the environment, the ground rules and the guide keep that choice purposeful.

Will my child be ready for Grade 1?

Yes. Our eldest children usually read, write and work confidently with numbers into the thousands - and just as importantly, they can manage themselves in a group.

What's a prepared environment?

Younger children learn by watching; older children consolidate by teaching. It mirrors a family far better than a room of same-aged peers.

What about screens?

There are none in our classrooms. Young children learn through the hands and the senses, and we protect that time carefully.
